Engineering Geology Ltd

The senior staff at Engineering Geology Ltd are frequently called on to provide expert opinion and technical evidence. We have acted as geotechnical advisors and reviewers for various Local Councils and have often provided review and advice in relation to litigation on a variety of different projects. We have undertaken a large number of investigations to establish the cause and responsibility of geotechnical related failures including damage to buildings due to slope failure, settlement, collapse of dams and failures of retaining walls. We have presented expert evidence at Resource Consent hearings, arbitrations and at the High Court. Our advice is often sought to review insurance claims for damage. We have undertaken a large number of independent design reviews of dams and water related projects. Dr Trevor Matuschka has also been appointed to peer review panels for several major landfills. 

Some projects in which we have provided expert opinion and independent and peer review include: 

  • SH1, Puhoi to Albany – Stage A and 1 (1996-2001). Geotechnical review
  • Martha Mine, Waihi (1998). Evidence to Environmental Court for proposed expansion of mine
  • Tillegra Water Storage Dam, NSW (2007-2010). Trevor Matuschka was a member of the Peer Review Panel for a 76m high concrete faced rockfill dam (450Mm3 storage)
  • Lee Valley Dam, Nelson (2007-2010). Independent peer review of proposed 52m high water storage dam (13Mm3 storage)
  • Goro Nickel Project, New Caledonia (2003-2010).   Trevor Matuschka was appointed Geotechnical Design Review Engineer for major nickel project (US$4.3 billion capital cost), responsible for reviewing scope of work, results and design recommendations for geotechnical work covering the Port, Process Plant, residue storage facility and other infrastructure facilities
  • Trevor Matuschka is a member of the Peer Review Panels for the Greenmount, Rosedale and Whitford Landfills and provides technical assistance to the Kate Valley Landfill Peer Review Panel
  • Trevor Matuschka undertakes on-going peer review of design, construction and operation of the NZ Steel sludge disposal facility at Glenbrook
  • Jeremy Yeats has reviewed the groundwater drawdown, retaining wall deformation, ground settlement and proposed monitoring plans for eight different resource consent applications for Auckland Regional Coucil
