DR TREVOR MATUSCHKA

Trevor Matuschka is a Consulting Engineer and Director of Engineering Geology Ltd. He completed a PhD in Engineering at Auckland University in 1980 on the assessment of seismic hazard in New Zealand. He then spent three years working for Fugro/Ertec Western Inc., a large specialist geotechnical consulting company in California, where he carried out seismic studies and research on a variety of large projects located in the USA and worldwide including nuclear power plants, offshore oil platforms, ports, pipelines and large industrial facilities. Trevor returned to New Zealand in 1983 and spent nearly six years with Tonkin & Taylor Ltd as a senior geotechnical engineer where his work included water and tailings dam design, seismic studies and investigations for commercial and industrial projects. In 1989 he joined Engineering Geology Ltd as a Director.

Trevor has specialist expertise in earthquake related geotechnical problems, but much of his work is now associated with mining projects and water storage dams. In the past 25 years he has been involved in the investigation, design, construction and peer review of a large number of water storage dams in New Zealand and the design and review of tailings storage facilities for large mining projects in New Zealand, Australia, New Caledonia, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, Bulgaria, Romania and Congo. He has also undertaken specialist seismic studies for mines, pipelines and various other industrial projects. Trevor has acted on peer review panels for several landfills and large overseas dam and mining projects and has carried out safety evaluations of numerous major water supply and hydro-electric dams in the North and South Islands of New Zealand. Trevor has also provided expert evidence for insurance, litigation and dam failure incidents.  He has undertaken several research projects and prepared and presented a number of technical papers.  He was made a fellow of the Institution of Professional Engineers in 1996, in recognition of his contribution to earthquake and geotechnical engineering.
